My Favorite Books of 2024

I read 60 books this year and so I had many choices when it came to compiling my list of  favorites for 2024.  These aren't necessarily the best or the most critically acclaimed books I read this year but they are the books I liked the best.  Two of the authors: Tony Horwitz and George Gissing I have read before.  The remaining seven are new to me and so in no particular order here is my list of favorites for 2024:

Not sure if I will read 60 books in 2025.  I might go for 50 books instead.  And Libby is such a wonderful reading service. Five of my favorite books I was able to borrow through Libby.

I hope everyone has a very Happy New Year and that we read alot of great books in 2025!

  2. Great to see your list Kathy. You had a great year with many good reads and we read the same amount of 60. I've read three from your list but I'd like to read several others. I still want to read My Friends, and Forbidden Notebook, and maybe learn more about John Brown with Midnight Rising. The Road to Dalton and the House of Doors were excellent. Here's to many more in 2025! Happy holiday.

    1. Happy Holidays Susan and I am looking forward to your best book list. The Forbidden Notebook I really enjoyed. It was the one book that I was never in doubt it would be on the list.

  3. I always love seeing people's lists of favorite books at the end of the year; I had to do two lists this year because I couldn't narrow my favs down to just ten. They'll post at the end of the week. :D

    1. Hi Lark, I look forward to your 2024 lists of favorite books. I will definitely be reading a few of those books in the New Year along with the Victoria Thompson Gaslight series which you have posted about and I am really enjoying.

  4. Sixty books is definitely reading at a good clip!

I agree--The Road to Dalton was excellent, and the sequel is on my list for 2025, especially since I have plans to visit Maine again in June.

Gissing is also most definitely on the 2025 list.

Best wishes for a terrific reading year in 2025. I really enjoy your blog and find so many books we enjoy in common!

  5. Thanks Jane and 60 books in one year is a record for me. The Road To Dalton was recommended by Cue Card and I agree it is excellent and the sequel is a good book to take with you when you visit Maine.

Hope you have a wonderful New Year and lI ook forward to the books you will read in 2025.

  6. This is a nice list with a lot of variety. I will be reading two of these, hopefully in 2025: The Road to Dalton and Jane Austen at Home.

    1. Thanks Tracy and it helped this year that I read more books because I had more of a selection to choose from. The Road To Dalton and Jane Austen at Home I really recommend. Jane Austen at home is not a long book but it is densely packed and so you can't read it all in 3 days but it's worth taking your time with and you learn much about Austen and her family.

  8. Jane Austen at Home was one of my favourite non-fiction books from last year. Very interested in that George Gissing book, will look that up. I think you're like me in that your reading is quite eclectic. Happy New Year, Kathy!n

    1. Happy New Year Cath and thanks for recommending Jane Austen at Home. Lucy Worsley is a very fine writer and as a historian she knew not to overspeculate about what Jane Austen was thinking and feeling. Instead she stuck with the facts and by doing so we get an accurate picture of Austen and her family although Jane will always be a bIt of a mystery.

Glad you will be reading Gissing but though I really enjoyed The Nether World its better to start with The Odd Women or New Grubb Street and then move on to The Nether World which is rather dark.
