I haven't posted in awhile because I am reading, and very much enjoying, The Nether World by George Gissing. He's one of my favorite writers but the Nether World is a long book and so I hope to have something posted in a week.
In the meantime I wanted to check in and Publisher's Weekly has listed their top books for 2004. I was glad to see My Friends by Hisham Matar made the list. I also must read James and Travelling On The Path of Joni Mitchell sounds interesting. Here is the full Publisher's Weekly list of their top ten books for 2024:
All Fours by Miranda July
James by Percival Everett
The Book of Love by Kelly Link
By the Fire We Carry: The Generations-Long Fight for Justice on Native Land by Rebecca Nagle
The Heart That Fed: A Father, a Son, and the Long Shadow of War by Carl Sciacchitano
Herscht 07769 by László Krasznahorkai, trans. from the Hungarian by Ottilie Mulzet
My Friends by Hisham Matar
Survival Is a Promise: The Eternal Life of Audre Lorde by Alexis Pauline Gumbs
Traveling: On the Path of Joni Mitchell by Ann Powers
When the Clock Broke: Con Men, Conspiracists, and How America Cracked Up in the Early 1990s by John Ganz.
As I look at this list I am so grateful to Libby which I discovered earlier this year. It has really changed and improved my reading life. So many titles are available through Libby. It's a great service.
Hope everyone is having a great Autumn!

I am such a backlist reader that I rarely read new books, but James is on my list! Thanks for posting this. I would like to read a few new releases each year.
ReplyDeleteAnd, I am gearing up for George Gissing in 2025.
This year because the classics challenge was not happening I did read new authors and releases. It was a good experience. I hope you like George Gissing and either Tne Odd Women or New Grub Street are the novels to start with.
DeleteKathy, I can relate. I'm slowly making my way thru Maugham's Of Human Bondage, which is long so who knows when I'll get it done. Looking over the PW best list: I too want to read the Joni Mitchell book, and try again on the Matar book (i didn't get far enough in), and I'm on the fence about the Miranda July novel. Is it too weird? Or not for me? I've just heard snippets it sounds a bit out there. Enjoy the Gissing.
ReplyDeleteI may try one or two more books on the PW top ten list. I read Maugham's The Painted Veil. But I much preferred the more optimistic movie ending.
DeleteMy Friends and James are two I want to read...though I won't be getting to them until next year. And I really enjoyed the one Gissing book I've read (The Odd Women); I'd like to read New Grub Street by him next.
ReplyDeleteI think you will like My Friends. And New Grub Street I thought was excellent. I kind of hope the Classics Challenge comes back next year. I miss it.
DeleteI miss it, too!
DeleteI am confused as to why the top books for the year come out at the end of October. Regardless it is an interesting list, but I am not in a rush to get to any of them in a hurry. Except maybe All Fours by Miranda July. I will have to look into that more.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering that too because there are still books I would imagine coming out in Nov and Dec. My TBR list is such that adding new books a problem.
