The 2024 Historical Fiction Reading Challenge

For 2024 I have decided to participate in The Historical Fiction Reading Challenge hosted by Marg at The Intrepid Reader and Baker (http://www.theintrepidreader.com)

As Marg tells us: "Any sub-genre of historical fiction is accepted (Historical Romance, Historical Mystery, Historical Fantasy, Young Adult, History/Non-Fiction, etc" and you can choose from the following categories:

20th Century Reader - 2 books

Victorian Reader - 5 books

Renaissance Reader - 10 books

Medieval - 15 books

Ancient History - 25 books

 Prehistoric books - 50+ books

I have decided to go with 15 historical novels from the Medieval period (500 AD to 1500 AD).  It sounds like a fun challenge.

    1. Thanks Cath. It should be fun. I used to think that the Middle Ages began in the year 1000 AD but actually that is the exact middle of the middle ages. They begin in 500 AD and by the time you get to 1500 AD the middle ages are in their final century.

  2. Good luck with this reading challenge! It sounds like fun. One day I'll have to give this one a try. Though I'd probably be stuck somewhere between the Victorian and Renaissance level. ;D

    1. Thanks Kark, I would have liked to have chosen Ancient history or Prehistoric but 25 and 50 books for these categories! So I went with Medieval

    2. Sorry Lark for misspelling your name in my above response. I wish they had an edit button in the replies. Have a very Merry Christmas.

  3. Good for you doing this challenge. I did it for several years and I usually picked historical mysteries.

    1. Hi Tracy, good point historical mysteries are the way to go because they tend to be shorter and a good mystery makes for faster reading. And there are a number of mystery series set in the middle ages.

  4. That's quite a challenge, but I'm betting that your deep dive into the genre will turn up some really interesting titles. I'll look forward to hearing about them.

    1. It is quite a challenge and I am thinking maybe too big a challenge. LOL. But I at least plan to read 5 Medieval novels in 2024. And the Ellis Perry books are short but I don't want to stick with just one author.

  5. I used to do this challenge, and maybe I will again in 2024. I like the idea of sticking to one time period for the challenge. Historical fiction is definitely my favorite genre, so meeting the challenge is not actually a challenge, but fun to play along and see what others are reading. Good luck!

    1. Hi Jane I can see ahead of time I will never get to finish 15 Medieval historical novels in 2024 so I am trimming my sails. I think maybe 7 is a good number to shoot for and there should be no pressure so I will see what I can do.

  6. Wow, 15 books set in the middle ages. That's impressive. Do you know your titles yet? I'm trying to think of some. I like historical fiction. That's a neat challenge. Good luck.

    1. Hi Susan, I know 15 is alot and I don't see myself reaching 15 but 10 maybe. One good thing is the challenge includes Medieval nonfiction books so that might make it easier. I am thinking off the bat of Cloud Cukoo Land which is getting alot of raves. And The Last Kingdom
